 Ramshaw Rocks and The Roaches with Ann and Julian

We'd arranged to meet up with Ann and Julian, and had suggested the Ramshaw Rocks - Roaches - Hen Cloud walk, which had a degree of flexibility. We had done this walk for the first time on 28th August 2021 and it would be great to do it again for the blog this year. We met at the Tittesworth Reservoir car park- full of rabbits and ducks, as before!


The initial section along the road isn't particularly pleasant but we were soon off it and onto tracks and paths with no traffic. We wound our way up, via the ford at Upper Hulme and Naychurch up to Ramshaw Rocks.

There were great views, and wonderful geological forces on display. We then dropped down to Hazel Barrow and decided to carry on, beside the river, and past Goldstich House. the trackway then climbed steadily, past the remote schoolhouse eventually to reach the lane at Roach End. David was disappointed that the ice cream van wasn't there.

There's a steady path up the edge and up to the summit at 505m, with views either side where we were able to see the way that we'd been. Sections of the path were being repaired and re-paved with gritstone slabs.

After passing the Doxey Pool, we dropped down to walk between the upper and lower tiers, where a few climbers were out for the day. David stopped to look wistfully at a location of past glories, Don Whillans' "The Sloth".

We'd had a good day so we decided not to go up Hen Cloud but worked our way down to make our way back to the Tittesworth Reservoir.

The way took us past the wonderful early-Jacobean Windygates and through to open fields and the final section of the walk back to the car park.

Ann and Julian invited us back to Broad Oak for a very welcome cup of tea and some very classy biscuits.

 Lyme Park- Bowstonegate, Dale Top and Cluse Hay Our last walk of the year; less ambitious as it was not that clear what the rain would do. In the end, we enjoyed a dry and slightly different walk of a bit under four miles around Lyme Park. We parked at the top by Bowstones Farm and followed the path more or less south outside the wall of the park.   Western Edale Circuit The forecast was for low-level cloud/mist and possibly clear tops so we abandoned our original plan to do the "Frisky Cows" walk from Castleton. We'll definitely save that for another day. An obvious alternative was to walk from Mam Tor and over Rushup Edge, and then see where we went to from there. On further reflection, starting from the Mam Tor car park would mean that the final stretch of the walk would be uphill so we took the sensible option of starting from Edale and having a coffee in The Penny Pot . As with our walk last Friday, we walked up to Hollins Cross. Although the mist was blowing in and out, we still managed to have some typical views.  The Great Ridge, Lose Hill and Kinder The forecast was for a dry and sunny day and it certainly didn't disappoint. There was lovely sunshine all day and this only changed as the sun went down, just before 4pm and we were virtually back at the car. We made an early start- stopping for a coffee and a warm-up at the Penny Pot.
